Alabama is ranked 44th in the number of cancer related deaths and 49th in the incidence of deaths caused by cardiovascular problems per 100,000 of the population.

ALABAMA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Drinking too much alcohol in the state among adults has fallen marginally and is estimated at 10.4% at present.

ALABAMA HEALTH STRENGTHS

The state of Alabama scores highly on many key health factors:

  • Each person have a high public health fund

  • Low number of adults who heavily drinks alcohol

  • Most of the population is covered in terms of immunization

ALABAMA HEALTH CHALLENGES

The health challenges in Alabama are mainly due to the high dominance of these three factors:

  • Diabetes

  • Obesity

  • Smoking

The Diabetes unit of the Alabama Department of Public Health, together with units within the department and outside it, helps postpone or prevent the onset of diabetes. It also minimizes diabetes related damage to the vital organs by healthy eating, regular exercising, monitoring weight loss and having regular checkups.

The program aims to promote general health by advocating a healthier lifestyle, targeting specifically the minorities who are at greater risk from diabetes.

Besides the diabetes control program, Tobacco-free Alabama aims to bring down the number of smokers in the state. The program distinctly opposes smoking and is concerned about passive smokers too. Tobacco-free Alabama proposes school based intervention supported by media.

The Alabama Tobacco Quitline service provides online counseling services to all residents of the state who want to quit smoking. It has helped thousands of smokers get rid of this very harmful addiction ever since its inception in 2005.

In addition to these, Youth Tobacco Program and Control Program finances projects that help save the youth from the clutches of this awful habit. Non-government organizations have been working actively along with state sponsored drug and tobacco prevention bodies to educate the public about the dangerous effects prolonged use of tobacco.
