CALIFORNIA HIGHLIGHTS

  • At present there are 3.4 million smokers in the state, which means that the number of smokers has fallen by 852,000 people over the last decade.

  • The number of obese people has increased and there are 6.9 million obese people at present.

  • 8.6% of the adults in California are diabetics. This indicates an increase of 2% over the last 10 years.

CALIFORNIA HEALTH STRENGTHS

  • The infant mortality rate is low

  • Cigarette smokers count is low

  • Early prenatal care is used accordingly

CALIFORNIA HEALTH CHALLENGES

  • Have a very polluted air

  • Only few are covered with immunization

  • Only few people are insured

The VFC (California Vaccines for Children) program, managed by the Immunization Branch of the California Department of Public Health, has been working to help families across the state by providing free vaccines to doctors who use them on children who are below 18 years of age.

To be eligible for free vaccines under this program, children MUST be less than 18 years old and should satisfy any one of the following prerequisites:

  • Should be uninsured

  • Should be eligible for Medi-Cal or CHDP (Child Health Disability Program)

  • Should be a native of Alaska or an American Indian

The program does not cover children who have enrolled under the Healthy Families program. Besides this, the Infectious Disease Control Department, through its Immunization Branch, helps produce and distribute materials that will help promote vaccination. Material is available about topics related to:

  • Infant immunization

  • Pre-teen vaccination

  • Flu prevention

  • Immunization for a healthy pregnancy

  • HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) prevention

  • My Best Shot (a website that creates awareness regarding immunization among adolescents)

Besides this, there is OMH (Office of Multicultural Health) which advises both- the CPDH (California Department of Public Health) and the DHCS (Department of Health Care Services) on cultural and racial issues and helps the coordinate the activities of departments and the healthcare providers. It takes concerted action to formulate and implement new policies and measures regarding the health of minority communities.

The OMH amends the problem of inconsistency in the availability of health care services. It encourages community involvement in decisions related to public health and helps create a network of information between the CPDH, the DHCS and ethnic communities. Its overall aim is to improve the prevailing health of minority communities in the state.
