The Colorado Department of Public Health has introduced a Prenatal Plus program to provide counseling and psychological support to pregnant women. All aspects that could affect a woman’s pregnancy are taken into consideration before guiding her.
The support provided by this program helps women deliver healthier babies (who do not have low birth weight) by providing them regular prenatal care. To ensure that these facilities can be availed by women from the weaker sections of the society, they are exempt from all co-payments.
Women who are more likely to have high risk pregnancies include minors, are highly stressed, those who smoke, use drugs and alcohol during pregnancy or have delivered a low birth-weight baby in the past.
Every woman who enrolls for this program is assisted by a Case Manager, a Registered Dietitian and a mental health professional to help reduce the risk of negative infant and maternal health outcomes. Together this team ensures that pregnant women get regular prenatal care, proper diet, housing assistance, help with continuing education, assistance in finding a job, etc.
Other than this program, the Colorado Indigent Care Program (CICP), which is administered by the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy, provides health care facilities to the underprivileged people at discounted rates. Funded partially by federal and state governments, it partially compensates health care providers who provide services to the uninsured and the underinsured. All US citizens, legal immigrants, and residents of Colorado from all age groups who meet income and resource guidelines are eligible for discounts under the CICP.
