Delaware health overview
The state of Delaware was ranked 30th in overall health in 2011.
It is ranked 25th among the states in the number of deaths caused by heart problems and 40th in the number of cancer related deaths per 100,000 people.
The incidence of diabetes among adults has registered an increase over the last decade and is estimated at 60,000 people at present.
The percentage of adult smokers has fallen from 22.9% to 17.3% over the last decade. There are 120,000 adult smokers in the state now.
The percentage of children below 18 living among poverty has increased by more than 3% over the last 10 years and was put at 17.5% as per the latest estimates.
The number of obese adults in the state has almost doubled during the last decade, and nearly 199,000 adults in Delaware are considered obese.

The Enhanced Prenatal and Postpartum Care Program of the DDPH (Delaware Department of Public Health) offers improved prenatal care, care for the new baby in the first two years of its life and the mother after the birth of the baby. The services are specially meant for women:
Who are of African American/ Black descent
Who suffer from chronic diseases like asthma, diabetes, hypertension, etc.
Who have had a low-birth weight baby earlier, a preterm birth, a still birth, an infant death or a miscarriage
Who are uninsured or underinsured medically
Who need social support
This program provides many services for such women includes regular prenatal checkups, especially for high risk pregnancies and special care for the mother after the birth of the baby for a period of two years which includes nutritional counseling, psycho-social needs, pregnancy diagnosis and counseling, contraceptive education and counseling, testing and treating STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), testing and treating HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome) and AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome), counseling regarding problems with conception and infertility, and many other services.
Breastfeeding is promoted and patients with chronic diseases are given special counseling to help them deal with problems that can otherwise lead to low birth weight or still births, etc.
Adult offenders who have had problems related to drug/alcohol abuse and are involved in court cases are dealt with through a special procedure through the TASC (Division’s Treatment Access Center).
Jul 31, 2018 -- Shooter performs CPR on his victim
Desmond Chisholm was driving on I-95 when he saw a man lying on the ground whom he thought was a vicitim of a heart attack. Then a man suddenly approached him and said he shot the victim in self-defense. The shooter performed CPR on the victim and called 911 for help. When Sergeant Richard Bratz of the Delaware Police arrived on the scene, he concluded that road rage could have caused the shooting incident.
Aug 10, 2016 -- Heroic colleague saves friends life
It was a regular day for several SEPTA workers when one of their colleagues, John Thompson, suddenly collapse on the floor. They all jumped to the action by providing CPR assistance while waiting for the police and EMT services to arrive. The man was transported to a hospital where he recovered succesfully.
Feb 25, 2016 -- Police and bystander save man's life
Aubrey Washington was in the lobby of the New Castle County Courthouse when he experienced a seizure and went into cardiac arrest. Luckily, prepared professionals were also waiting in line at the lobby. Two police officers and Gary Alderson, who is an attorney and registered nurse, rushed to help Washington. The three took turns giving rounds of CPR. Washington was taken to the hospital where he recovered. Alderson and the officers were honored for their actions.
