Georgia Department of Health has started a Children’s Medical Service (CMS) to provide overall health care for kids and youth who suffer from chronic health problems and are less than twenty one years of age. CMS was specially meant to provide health care to children coming from low income households. Children from such families are administered services in an atmosphere that makes the child comfortable- cultural background and family ties are kept in mind.
To be eligible to get aid under the CMS, certain medical and financial requirements have been established. Families earning more than 150% of the FPL (Federal Poverty Level) to 236% of this level are required to contribute towards the cost of medical treatment. CMS offers services like meeting hospitalization expenses, services of a physician, cost of medicines, medical equipment and supplies.
The US Environmental Protection Agency released its first national standards for mercury and toxic air emissions, which might lead to the closure of some coal-burning generating units of the Georgia Power co. and thus prevent 4,700 heart attacks and 11,000 premature deaths every year and also prevent 6,300 cases of acute bronchitis and 130,000 cases of childhood asthma every year.
GACP (Georgia Asthma Control Program) was launched specifically for helping children with symptoms of asthma. This initiative is aimed at improving the quality of their lives by helping them learn more about the problem and teaching the patients and their families to self-manage their condition.
The GACP has, in association with Georgia Association of School Nurses (GASN), taken initiatives for establishing asthma friendly schools with the aim of reducing asthma related hospitalizations, emergency visits to the hospital and missing of school due to asthma related problems.
Sep 16, 2014 -- Soldier was at the right place and time to save a woman from submerged car
A U.S Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician was fishing on the south dock of Fort Stewart’s Holbrook Pond when he heard a splash from the pond. It turned out that a sedan went into the pond and in that instant, the training from the army kicked in. The soldier quickly went to the scene of the incident, dove into the water and pulled the passenger from the back seat. The victim, a woman, was already turning blue and so the soldier performed CPR until she was revived. He even stayed by her side until paramedics arrived. The pond was said to be home to snakes and alligators.
Nov 21, 2014 -- Police officer saved the life of a heart attack victim
A Johns Creek Police officer was nearby when he received an emergency call about a man who had a heart attack on a local golf course. He sped to the club and there he found the 84-year old victim with two men already performing CPR on him. Using the AED provided in the police car, he used the device to assess the victim’s heart rhythm which he found to be fibrillating. The AED recommended a shock to the victim’s heart. After two shocks and continued chest compressions, the victim’s pulse was restored. The officer visited the victim at the hospital where the old man thanked him for saving his life.
Dec 02, 2014 -- Brookhaven police officers used CPR and AED to save a woman after cardiac arrest
Police officers responded to an emergency call in a business office with a victim of cardiac arrest. When they arrived at the scene, they found that CPR was being given to the 54-year old victim. One officer took over the CPR while the two prepared the AED they have with them. With the use of CPR and the device, the three officers were able to successfully revive the female victim before paramedics arrive. The use of the automated external defibrillator is crucial in a cardiac arrest emergency outside of a hospital as it can restore a victim’s heartbeat to normal.

Oct 24, 2016 -- A firefighter's day to be remembered
It was a hectic day for expert firefighter Bubba McGraw. He answered the call of Dominique Bowman, the mother of little Payslei Bowman. Dominique reported that her daughter was not breathing after a severe coughing episode. When Bowman came to the rescue he found Dominique giving CPR to the little baby and assisted her. Little Payslei was not responding at all, but after several minutes her heart started beating. “I just cupped my hand over her mouth and gave her a breath and when I did, she went to coughing. And I felt her little heart. I haven’t felt a little heart beat that hard,” said the heroic firefighter. Bubba is now a part of Bowman’s family and is referred to as “uncle” by little Payslei.
