Idaho health overview

Idaho has fallen from the 9th position held by it in 2010 to the 14th position in 2017.

It was ranked 22th in the number of deaths caused by heart troubles and 28th in the number of cancer related deaths (Stats of the State of Idaho, 2018).

Idaho highlights

  • The rate of smoking among adults has gone down from 22.3% to 15.7% though the state still has 179,000 adult smokers.

  • The number of obese people in Idaho has increased and is estimated at 179,000 adults at present.

  • The rate of preventable hospitalizations in the state has increased by more than 10% during the last year.

  • With a 1% increase in the rate of adult diabetics, their number has risen to 90,000.

  • The number of children below 18 years of age who live in poverty has increased from 12.4% to 18.9% over the last five years.

Idaho health strengths

  • Low crime rate

  • Low rate of preventable hospitalizations

  • Low rate of outbreak of infectious diseases

Idaho health challenges

  • Low coverage by immunization programs

  • Limited availability of primary care providers

  • A large uninsured population

The Rural Health Care Access program (RHCAP) works for providing access to primary health care and dental health to rural Idaho communities across the state by overhauling healthcare systems in areas specified as ‘health professional shortage areas and medically underserved areas’. To bet grants under this scheme, the applicant must be a registered non-profit organization or a government agency. Individuals are not entitled to receive grants under this scheme.

The WHC (Women’s Health Check) program has been offering free breast and cervical cancer screening services for the last 14 years to all women who meet the specified guidelines and are uninsured or underinsured. The WCH program provides annual mammograms, annual clinical breast tests, 3 annual pap tests and help with diagnosis (if required) to all women who qualify.

To be eligible for this service, a woman must be aged 50 to 65 years for a clinical breast test and 40–40 years for a pap test. It proposes regular checkups and screenings for women who qualify, since getting tested intermittently is just not enough.

The IRIS (Idaho Immunization Reminder Information System) initiative helps keep complete and accurate computerized records of all immunization details of children born in the state. The information thus stored is completely confidential and available only to healthcare providers, child care programs or schools. The IRIS, despite of complex immunization schedules, makes sure that no one misses out on a dose or gets an overdose of a vaccine due to incomplete or inaccurate records.

Sep 26, 2016 -- Officers recieve Lifesaving Award from department

Officer Bridget McArthur and Jordan Johnson recieved the Pocatello Police Department's Lifesaving Award. The officers responded to call stating that a woman had stopped breathing. They checked the woman's vital signs and found that she did not have a pulse. They worked together to perform CPR, but when she regained consciousness she was not out of the woods yet. While waiting for EMS, Officer McArthur knew she needed to keep the woman talking so that she would not go unconscious again. Both officers were given the award for their quick thinking and life-saving actions.
