Since cancer takes a huge toll on the health of this state, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released funds for implementing a program that could help in early detection of cervical and breast cancer.
The goals of this program, in addition to the ones listed above, include helping uninsured and underinsured women gain access to screening and diagnostic services for cervical and breast cancer. This program raises awareness among the women of the area and encourages them to get screened regularly for breast and cervical cancer. Women aged 35–64 fall in the high risk category. Health care professionals and organizations are trained and assisted to ensure that quality services are always available to those who want to get diagnosed. Besides these measures, surveillance systems have been implemented for monitoring the headway made by this program and the degree of success achieved in the battle against cancer.
Activities undertaken by the program
At present, the program funds screening and diagnostic services at 300 sites.
Various facilities are provided at these sites for early detection and diagnosis. These facilities include breast and pelvic exams, PAP test, mammography, imaging services, pathology and cytology services.
The Maine Cancer Registry (MCR), which is a part of the cancer surveillance system, collects all information related to newly diagnosed and treated cases of cancer in Maine. This information is then used for understanding cancer better and in identifying areas where further improvement is possible.
Vaccine for Children Program (VCP) has been implemented to make vaccines available to underprivileged and impoverished kids below the age of 18. These vaccines are made available to them at a fraction of the actual cost. Special provisions have been made for uninsured children.
Sep 19, 2014 -- Two victims of fire at Biddeford were revived by CPR
It was a horrible fate for eight people who were victims of fire. Firefighters responded to a fire at 35 Main St. where it was reported that the fire started on a rear stairwell. Eight people in total were injured, however, two of them were critically injured in the fire. The two men were found at the third floor apartment and carried outside. Firefighters performed CPR on the two victims and they were able to revive them. They were taken to Maine Medical Center for further treatments. Upon further investigation, it was reported that the apartment where the two men were found did not have a working smoke detector.
