  • The rate of violent crime in the state has fallen sharply over the last 5 years and is estimated at 548 offences per 100,000 people presently.

  • The percentage of children below 18 who live in poverty has increased marginally and is estimated at 13.6%.

MARYLAND HEALTH STRENGTHS

  • Low rate of children living in poverty

  • Easily available primary care physicians

  • Low rate of smoking

MARYLAND HEALTH CHALLENGES

  • Highly polluted air

  • High rate of infant mortality

  • High rate of violent crime

A high infant mortality rate indicates the presence of problems like nutritional factors, environment, lifestyle, family history and poor access to health services within the community.

To tackle this problem, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) convened an Infant Mortality Epidemiology Work Group which is comprised of experts in this field. Concerted action is being taken to bring down the rate by providing better prenatal care, maintaining complete records and reaching out to the underprivileged sections.

Programs like “Healthy Women, Healthy Lives Program”, “Strategy to Improve Birth Outcomes”, “Babies Born Healthy Program”, have been undertaken to carry on the good work in this direction.

The DHMH continues to support programs like Improved Pregnancy Outcomes and FIMR (Fetal and Infant Mortality Review). The FIMR is a community based program which regularly “assesses, monitors and works to improve systems and resources for women, infants and families”.

The risk factors named by the Infant Mortality Epidemiology Work Group that need intervention on a priority basis include:

  • Obesity, cardiac problems, diabetes, asthma, use of tobacco, binge drinking, depression

  • Chronic conditions like hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, etc before, during or after pregnancy

  • Infertility treatment

  • Providing health care for very low birth weight babies

  • Assessing the timing and impact of risk-targeted prenatal care

  • Teen pregnancies (particularly among Hispanic teens) and motherhood after the age of 35

  • Early deliveries

Besides these, steps are taken to ensure mental well being of women at the time of conception and providing them easy access to prenatal care. Perinatal and neonatal follow-up after the birth of the baby ensures good health of both the mother and the child and thus helps bring down the infant mortality rate.

Dec 30, 2013 -- Infant Survives with the Help of an Officer- on- duty

While on street patrol, Officer Ben Crumlin saw flashing lights behind his vehicle. It was coming from a car, and thinking there was a crash, the officer checked what it was about. Instead, a man asked for help regarding his son not breathing in the backseat. Despite the risk of compressions on a small body, Officer Crumlin performed CPR efforts until the child is breathing on his own. The officer took him and his family to the hospital to receive proper medical care. The infant fully recovered, thanks to the CPR efforts of the officer and quick thinking of his family.
