Nebraska health overview
Nebraska, which was ranked 12th in overall health among US states in 2010, has fallen to the 13th position in 2017.
It ranked 34th in the number of deaths caused by cardiac problems and 30th in the cancer related deaths (Stats of the State of Nebraska, 2018).
Though the rate of smoking has fallen from 21.2% to 17.2% over the last decade, there are still 235,000 adult smokers in the state.
The incidence of obesity has increased and almost 27.5% adults are afflicted compared to 21.1% ten years ago. There are 376,000 obese adults in the state at present.
The incidence of diabetes has also increased and 7.7% of the adult population of the state (105,000 people) are affected by it now, compared to 4.9% a decade ago.
The rate of violent crime in the state became fewer from 43 to 28 offenses per 100,000 people over the last ten years.
The rate of outbreak of infectious diseases has also increased and is estimated at 14.1 people per 100,000 at present.
The rate of preventable hospitalizations in the state has fallen over the past year. It has fallen from 69.1% to 65.7% discharges per 1000 Medicare enrollees.
Nebraska health strengths
Low rate of children below 18 who live in poverty
A small uninsured population
High rate of high school graduates
Good mental and physical health, which reflects in fewer health days taken every month
Nebraska health challenges
High rate of binge drinking adults
Frequent infectious disease outbreaks
The public health services of the state, instead of focusing on the treatment of individuals, are directed towards bettering the overall health of the entire population.
The Nebraska department of Health and Human Services has clearly laid down its top five priorities:
Dealing with the disparities in the availability of health care facilities
Promoting overall health among the residents of the state
Becoming a reliable source of health related data
Formulating an education and media plan
Ensuring transparency in health funding
The main functions of the Public Health Department have been divided into four core segments:
Assessment: Assessing the health hazards and problems in the different regions of the state, diagnosing and investigating them.
Policy Development: To develop plans and policies which support the various health initiatives across the state for improving individual and community health.
Evaluation: Measuring and assessing the efficacy of the various initiatives in improving overall health.
Development: Working towards improving the quality of community based services across the state.
Keeping in view the high incidence of infectious diseases in the state, the DHHS has taken special measures focusing on the four main infectious diseases in the state which are:
Sexually transmitted diseases (STD)
The DHSS also provides housing options to people affected by HIV/ AIDS. Besides the above, the Nebraska DHSS sent out an RFP in 2012 for expanding its Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The expanded services would cover regions where per capita incomes are low and are poverty stricken.
