High coverage under immunization policies
Rhode island health challenges
High percentage of children living in poverty
High rate of binge drinking among adults
High rate of preventable hospitalizations
Since the rate of preventable hospitalizations in the state is extremely high, a series of steps have been taken to bring down this rate. One of the initiatives is a ban on smoking in public places to bring down the cases of hospitalization caused by heart attacks.
The Rhode Island Department of Health issued a press release in February 2012 which reveals how the number of hospitalizations caused by AMI (Acute Myocardial Infarction), commonly called heart attacks, have fallen sharply ever since the ban on smoking in public places was introduced in 2005.
A study reveals that in spite of the above measures, the rate of hospitalization due to asthma (particularly, among children) has not declined significantly. It also reveals that the incidence of asthma is higher among children living in poverty and poor housing conditions.
Sep 21, 2018 -- This school nurse and teacher is a hero
Joe Slater, a 15-year-old student from the Exeter West Greenwich Junior/Senior High School was playing basketball when he suddenly collapsed in the gym. Dawn Seitz, a school nurse and also a teacher was called on the scene and when she checked on Slater, the boy, who does not have a history of heart disease whatsoever, did not have any pulse. She requested for somebody to call 911. While waiting for paramedics to arrive, the nurse immediately performed CPR and Slater regained consciousness after a few minutes. Seitz recently received the Golden Apple Award after fellow teacher Nichole Pichette nominated her to this prestigious award-giving body.
