The SC DPCP (South Carolina Division of Diabetes Prevention and Control) was set up in 1994 to help bring down the complications, impairments and health complications caused by diabetes and to bring down the level of diabetes-related disparities.

The SC DPCP aims to achieve these goals by advocating similar standards of diabetes care all over the state and incorporating these standards into clinical outcomes. The group works concertedly to bring together all the residents of the state (including Latinos, Hispanics, African Americans, the elderly and the disabled) within the purview of the recommended standards of diabetes care.

The DNPAO (Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity) has launched several initiatives to reduce the rate of obesity and associated diseases by promoting healthier eating habits and a more energetic lifestyle among South Carolinians.

One such initiative in this initiative is the ABC Grow Healthy Project which aims to setup and enforce a nutritional model for all the child care centers in South Carolina. It also gives child care vouchers to children of families belonging to low income demographics of the population.

Keeping in view the direct correlation between diet and obesity the SC DPCP has developed a curriculum for creating diabetes prevention and awareness called “Diabetes 101”. This program helps understand the symptoms and the risk factors associated with this silent killer while explaining the role of healthy eating and physical activity in keeping the level of blood sugar and cholesterol in check.
