Utah health overview
The state of Utah has been ranked as the 7th healthiest state for two years in a row. It ranks 3rd in the number of deaths caused by cardiac problems and first in the number of cancer related deaths per 100,000 people.
The rate of obesity among adults has increased from 19.1% to 23.0% over the last decade.
Today Utah has 435,000 obese adults.
The prevalence of diabetes among adults has risen from 5.5% to 6.5% over the last five years. Utah now has 123,000 adults who have been diagnosed with diabetes.
The rate of smoking has fallen from 12.9% to 9.1% over the last decade.
The rate of preventable hospitalizations in Utah has fallen from 39.9% to 36.7% per 1,000 Medicare enrollees within the last year.
Utah health strengths
Low rate of smoking among adults
Low rate of binge drinking
Lower rate of obesity as compared to other states
Low rate of cancer related deaths
Utah health challenges
Low coverage by immunization
Significant geographical disparities in access to health care
Limited availability of primary care physicians
The Utah department of Health Immunization program works to control the rate of vaccine preventable infectious diseases and disorders.
The VCH (Vaccines for Children) Program has been started to provide vaccines to children whose families cannot afford to buy them and to ensure that children receive their vaccines on time.
The OPCRH (Office of Primary Care and Rural Health) works for bettering the health of the rural residents of the state who do not have adequate access to healthcare facilities. It works with communities that need to be helped and after assessing their requirements, recruits professionals who work towards bettering the health statues of such communities. These professionals are required to work towards removing the disparities that exist in access to primary health care.
Since the rural areas of Utah do not have the required number of primary physicians, the OPCRH has launched several drives to encourage primary care physicians to come and work in the state. These initiatives include promoting practice opportunities to dentists, physicians, nurses, physician assistants and mental health therapists, shortlisting areas requiring immediate attention, visa waiver programs and scholarship programs.
