VERMONT HEALTH OVERVIEW

The state of Vermont is the healthiest state in the US and it has been the reigning champion for two years in a row. Vermont ranks 10th in the number of deaths caused by cardiac problems and 21st in the number of cancer related deaths per 100,000 people.

VERMONT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Obesity has increased over the last 10 years and now affects 23.9% of the adult population (compared to 18.2% ten years ago). The number of obese adults in the state has been estimated at 119,000.

  • The incidence of diabetes in Vermont has also increased and climbed up to 6.8% (compared to 4.6% ten years ago). 34,000 adults in the state have been diagnosed with diabetes at present.

  • The rate of smoking among adults has fallen from 21.5% to 15% over the last decade though the state still has 76,000 adult smokers among its population.

  • The outbreak of infectious diseases in the state has fallen from 8.5 to 3.1 cases per 100,000 people over the last year.

  • The percentage of children below 18 who live in poverty increased from 7.4% to 13.5% over the last five years.

VERMONT HEALTH STRENGTHS

  • Low incidence of infectious disease

  • Low rate of violent crime

  • High rate of graduating from high school. An educated population understands the importance of preventive health care.

  • High use of prenatal care, particularly in the early stages

VERMONT HEALTH CHALLENGES

  • High rate of binge drinking among adults

  • The percentage of people covered under from immunization is less than other states

Often called the “Green” state, Vermont is one of the healthiest states of America. However, that does not mean it is unaffected by health hazards.

Pollution continues to be a major cause of concern. The Vermont Department of Health receives and responds to hundreds of queries from concerned citizens, researchers and community organizations about health challenges stemming from air pollutants and water contaminants.

Since 2009, the health department of Vermont has received funds which are spent on building a network to collect healthcare data from across the state. This data is handed to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) National Tracking Network.

Recognizing the fact that better immunization coverage will help prevent and eventually eliminate preventable diseases and disorders, the Vermont Department of Health Immunization Program goes the extra mile to ensure that immunization coverage is extended to the maximum possible number of children and adults.

his program provides vaccines, training and technical support to vaccine providers in the public and private sector and creates awareness about the importance of immunization and vaccination.

Jul 19, 2018 -- Northshire Rescue Squad Gets A New Automatic CPR Unit

Rescue units no longer have to worry about limited number of staff during emergency situations. This newly-acquired equipment by the Northshire Rescue Squad can perform CPR the way an EMS can. The new equipment is called AutoPulse, an automatic CPR unit that can perform 80 compressions per minute on the entire chest and rib cage areas. It will significantly make the tasks easier for EMS as it will allow them to attend to more serious cases while the auto CPR is simultaneously doing its task. Subscription to this service is good for one year which covers all members of the family who have been listed in the subscription form.

Aug 26, 2018 -- Death Defying Hamilton Falls

A collective effort of both bystanders and troopers from the Vermont State Police in performing CPR revived the victim who fell off the Hamilton Falls. Seventeen year-old Tyler Rosenberg of New York was trying to cross to the other side of the falls when he slipped and fell, badly hitting his head. Bystanders on the scene immediately performed CPR to revive him while waiting for help. Additional CPR efforts were performed with the arrival of Corporal Mike Sorensen of the Vermont State Police until the victim started to breath on his own again.
