Virginia, ranked 22nd in regard to overall health in 2010, improved its position and ranked 19th in 2017. The state was ranked 30th in the number of deaths caused by cardiac problems and 30th in the number of cancer related deaths (Stats of the state of virginia, 2018).

  • The incidence of diabetes among the population has increased over the last five years and it now affects 8.7% of the population as compared to 6.9% last year. 535,000 adults in Virginia have been diagnosed with diabetes.

  • Obesity has become a major problem to state health officials as percentage of people affected by it has increased substantially. 26.4% of the adult population of Virginia is now considered obese (compared to 18.5% ten years ago).

  • The rate of adults who smokes tobaccos has fallen from 21.4% to 18.5% over the last decade though the state still has 1.1 million adult smokers.

  • The rate of adults who drinks a lot of alcohol has increased from 13.6% to 15.3% over the last year.

  • The percentage of children below 18 who live in poverty has fallen from 14.8% to 12.3% over the last year and is considerably lower than most states. Diabetes, which varies by race and ethnicity, also affects non-Hispanic blacks more severely with 13% of their population being affected as compared to a rate of 8.0% among non-Hispanic whites and 3.7% among Hispanics.

Alexa Rosales is the little angel who was found fighting between life and death by Officer David Cole . He jumped to the rescue by administering CPR on the small child. She immediately became responsive once her airway was cleared. The parents of Alexa quickly took her to a nearby hospital where she successfully recovered.

Jun 15, 2015 -- Sanitation worker helps ailing woman

Gul Nabi spent his Friday filling in for a garbage truck route in lieu of his usual job in street maintenance. His truck passed by a woman that apparently was in distress. Nabi went immediately to the woman’s aid. She was choking on a pill and was losing a lot of oxygen. Nabi performed CPR on the woman and was able to extract the lodged pill. He sought assistance from someone nearby, and left without any need of praise or reward. That didn’t stop the woman from thanking Nabi through his bosses. His act of random kindness certainly saved her life.
