The state of West Virginia is plagued by a high incidence of lifestyle related diseases like hyperlipidemia (high percentage of body fat), obesity, hypertension and Type II diabetes. To deal with the health problems related to diabetes, the West Virginia Diabetes Prevention and Control Program was started to create awareness among the residents which could lead to a delay in the onset of diabetes and also to deal with the consequences in a more dignified manner. The long term goal of the program is to make the quality of life better for those diagnosed with this disorder, and also for their families.
The OHL (West Virginia Office of Healthy Lifestyles) was created to encourage physical activities and to promote a healthier lifestyle among residents of the state by choosing healthier foods. It also encourages breast feeding and expands access to healthy foods.
The RCP (West Virginia Recruitable Community Program) which was set up in 1998 focuses on improving the rural communities’ ability to recruit medical providers through community development. Primary care residents, nurses and assistants are informed about the various incentives and rewards available by working in rural areas and recruitment workshops are conducted which focus on improving primary health care in rural areas.
